Posts Quick View Popup

Quick View opens a WordPress post in an iframe popup, so closing it leaves the grid on the same filter and page. It suits case studies.

Reading a post without leaving the grid

Quick View loads the post itself inside the lightbox, in a frame, with your theme header and footer hidden by CSS. A visitor clicks a card, reads, closes the popup and is back on the grid. The archive never reloads, so the filter and the page number stay where the visitor left them.

The alternative is the URL click action, the default for a post grid, which sends the visitor to the permalink. Pick that when the post is the destination. Quick View suits an index of case studies, where a visitor opens four or five in a row. The posts grid for WordPress demo runs the same content source with plain permalink links.

Settings behind the Quick View frame

Quick View is an entry in a sorted list rather than a switch. With Click Action set to Popup, Media Object Priority decides what each item opens, and the first entry the item has data for wins.

  • Media Object Priority defaults to Video, Audio, Album, Image. Post URL (Quick View) sits in the same list, switched off until you enable it and drag it to the top.
  • The frame loads URLs on your own site only. An item pointing at another domain will not open this way.
  • Internal Links and External Links inside the frame each take four values: Open in New Tab (the default), Open in Current Tab, Open in Frame, Prevent Click.
  • Display URL Button is on by default, adding a toolbar button that opens the framed page in a new tab.
  • The framed page carries the body class vp-popup-iframe, so a rule like .vp-popup-iframe .site-header { display: none } applies inside Quick View and nowhere else.
  • The grid above runs the Classic skin with the excerpt on and categories off, so a card shows a summary until the frame opens.

Putting a post in the frame in three steps

  1. Add the Gallery block, set Content Source to Posts and pick the Post type. Choose the Grid layout and the Classic skin, which keeps the caption and excerpt under the image.
  2. Open Click Action, set it to Popup, then switch on Post URL (Quick View) in Media Object Priority and drag it to the top so every post opens in the frame.
  3. Go to Visual Portfolio, Settings, Popup & Lightbox, and open the Quick View panel. Set what links inside the frame do, and extend the Custom CSS with the selectors your theme uses.

Quick View is the paid part of this grid

The grid, the filter and the image lightbox come with the free plugin. A license adds the Media Object Priority list, the Post URL (Quick View) entry inside it, and the Quick View panel in Settings. The free and Pro comparison has the rest of the split, and Visual Portfolio Pro pricing lists the plans.

  • Free: the posts content source, the Grid layout, the Classic skin with title, excerpt and date, the AJAX filter and pagination, and the image and video lightbox.
  • Pro: Display Image Priority, which decides which picture a slide shows, and deep linking, which puts the open slide in the address bar.
  • The Advanced click action is Pro too. It sets behaviour per post format, so video posts open in the popup while standard ones follow their permalink.
  • On the query side Pro adds filter by author, a publishing date range, Ignore Sticky Posts and Exclude Posts Without Thumbnail.
  • Pro contains the free plugin. You install one of them, not both.

What people ask about Quick View

Does the framed post show my site header?

Not by default. The Custom CSS field in the Quick View panel already hides the common header and footer selectors, and it applies to the framed page only. When something still shows through, add your own selectors there, prefixed with .vp-popup-iframe. The panel is documented on Settings, Popup & Lightbox.

Which lightbox script runs the popup?

Fancybox 3 and PhotoSwipe 4 both ship with the plugin, and Vendor Script picks one for the whole site. Fancybox is the default and the only one with thumbnails and a slideshow. PhotoSwipe is lighter. Arrows, counter, zoom, fullscreen, share, download and deep linking work in either, as Fancybox or PhotoSwipe explains.

Why does a card open the post page instead of the popup?

The Popup click action needs something to show. With Post URL (Quick View) at the top of the priority list every post qualifies. Without it, a post opens in the popup only when it has a featured image, or the Video format with a Video URL. Pro adds the Audio format, the Gallery format and custom media to that list. Anything else falls back to the permalink, as the posts content source explains.
