WordPress calls it the archive of the `portfolio` post type; Visual Portfolio lets you build it as an ordinary page. ![](https://staging.visualportfolio.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/Shot-2026-03-25-at-12.14.42-1-1024x429.jpg)![](https://staging.visualportfolio.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/Shot-2026-03-25-at-12.14.42-1-1024x429.jpg) ## How it is created On activation the plugin creates a page titled **Portfolio** (slug `portfolio`) and sets it as the **Archive Page** in [Settings → General](https://staging.visualportfolio.com/docs/settings/general/). The page contains one Visual Portfolio block with: - Content Source: Posts → **Current Query** - a Filter at the top - Paged pagination at the bottom Requests for the project archive (`/portfolio/`), for a Portfolio Category (`/portfolio-category/branding/`) and for a Portfolio Tag are answered with this page. On category and tag views the page title becomes “Portfolio Category: Branding” or “Portfolio Tag: …”, and the block shows the projects of that term. ## Edit it ![](https://staging.visualportfolio.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/Shot-2026-03-25-at-12.31.47-1024x581.jpg)![](https://staging.visualportfolio.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/Shot-2026-03-25-at-12.31.47-1024x581.jpg) Edit the Portfolio page like any page. Keep one Visual Portfolio block with **Current Query** as the source; change its layout, skin, filter, sort and pagination as you like, and add any other blocks around it. A block with another source (Media, a fixed post type) shows what that source says and ignores the archive request. The number of projects per page is **Settings → General → Archive Page Items Per Page** (default 6; `-1` shows all, up to 9999). The block’s own Items Per Page setting is hidden for Current Query. ## Assign a different page 1. Create a page (or pick an existing one) and add a Visual Portfolio block with Current Query. 2. Trashing the assigned page clears the setting; the archive then returns 404 until you assign another page. If the page was lost, deactivate and reactivate the plugin: it creates the Portfolio page again when no archive page is set. ## URL ![](https://staging.visualportfolio.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/Shot-2026-03-25-at-12.32.55-1024x523.jpg)![](https://staging.visualportfolio.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/Shot-2026-03-25-at-12.32.55-1024x523.jpg) The slug of the Portfolio page is the base of every project URL: with the default permalink structure a project lives at `/portfolio/project-name/` because the page slug is `portfolio`. Renaming the slug renames the project URLs; the plugin flushes the permalink rules for you. See [Settings → Permalinks](https://staging.visualportfolio.com/docs/settings/permalinks/). The Portfolio page can be the static front page (Settings → Reading). Projects then live at `/project-name/` and archive pages at `/page/2/`. ## Pagination and filter URLs On this page, and only here, filter and pagination produce pretty URLs: `/portfolio/page/2/`, `/portfolio-category/branding/`, `/portfolio-category/branding/page/2/`. Elsewhere the Visual Portfolio block uses `?vp_filter=` and `?vp_page=`. Sort keeps the `?vp_sort=` form everywhere. Feeds exist for the archive and each term: `/portfolio/feed/`, `/portfolio-category/branding/feed/`. ## Block themes The Portfolio page is a page, so it is edited in the page editor, not in the Site Editor. The Site Editor’s “Archive: Project” template is not used while an Archive Page is set. ## SEO Yoast SEO, Rank Math and All in One SEO get the right canonical URL, Open Graph URL and schema for the archive and its category and tag views. Other SEO plugins see the page as a page. ## Multilingual With WPML, translate the Portfolio page; the translation is mapped automatically. Keep the same slug for the archive page and the project base in every language. See [Multilingual](https://staging.visualportfolio.com/docs/multilingual/). ## Troubleshooting - **The page shows nothing or the wrong items.** Check the block’s source is Current Query and that projects are published. - **404 on `/portfolio/` or on projects.** Open Settings → Permalinks and click Save Changes. Restore it or assign another one.
